Our Story
Koum Therapies was founded in 2024, inspired by the journey of a stroke survivor who, despite being independent and successful, faced major challenges after experiencing a stroke while holidaying in Dorset.
She had a significant stroke effecting many aspects of her body & mind. Myself and the patient became close through repeated functional assessments, tears of fustration & prayers of hope. Whilst undertaking her rehabilitation I went on bereavement leave due to my dad's passing. Upon my return I was informed that she had been discharged home using a Stedy transfer aid - meaning she was unable to step or walk leaving the hospital. Reflecting on her case, I felt deeply that with more time, she could have made further progress and potentially accessed specialist community therapy.
Two years later, while covering a shift on the acute stroke ward, I unexpectedly saw her again when her partner was admitted at the Grange Hospital. This felt remarkable in itself, as I do not often work on that ward. She remained to have some speech and arm difficulties, but shared that she was now able to step independently between furniture without the transfer aid. The family indicated that they supported her through this transition.
I was unable to explore this further as her focus was understandably on her partner. However, this encounter highlighted to me a common need seen throughout my career of a lack of time and resources.
This case being one of my reasons of starting this business, to offer support without the limitations of time pressures, hospital constraints and a space to offer faith based therapy.
Our mission is to provide personalised rehabilitation that incorporates faith, compassion, and holistic support throughout each individual’s recovery journey.
